Alright, so we know that “core” training is en vogue, from various fitness publications to hardcore powerliftrrs and bodybuilders to the oxygen channel, everyone is talking about how you should be training you “core”. Well the truth is that real CORE STRENGTH comes from the synergy of a bunch of different muscles working together (from your lats down to your hip complex and everything inbetween), namely to stabilize the spine. I know, I know, its all about “core stability” – but for combat athletes and strength freaks, we’re looking to go beyond planks and other more direct movements in favor of multi purpose movements that give us a huge bang for our buck. Squatting, deadlifting, lunging, chin ups are all great choices and should incorporated into everyone’s program in one form or another, but there is still a huge component missing from most people’s training!

The answer? Heavy single hand overhead work – namely strict presses and push presses. Simple clean a heavy dumbbell or kettlebell to your shoulder and press overhead – using leg drive if needed – while maintaining a rigid core. This movement alone will engage everything from your glutes to your lats, requiring your stabilizers to work overtime! Along with thrashing your pressing muscles (shoulder complex and triceps), these are a total body movement that will get you strong all over! Back in the days of the old time strongmen, you were not considered strong unless you could press HEAVY weights overhead.

Single hand dumbbell and kettlebell work were staples in those guys training programs! In addition to traditional dumbbells or kettlebells, i’ve recently added weight to my 24kg kettlebell by attaching 20lb chains to the handle. This makes the movement extremely difficult, with the chains swaying back and forth, your body has to work very hard to stabilze throughout the entire range of motion! Heavy single hand overhead work can serve as an awesome workout alone, maybe with some weighted pull ups thrown in for good measure, to work your entire musculature and multiple energy systems in one shot. That’s what I call training economy!

Here are my 3 favorite ways to do heavy dumbbell or kettlebell overhead work. With each of these options, rest periods will be limited, which is great for power endurance and lactic acid tolerance. For fighters or athletes looking to to just get leaner, mixing in some of these options would of huge benefit.

Option 1:
With a heavy dumbell or kettlebell, perform five presses or push presses with your left, switch, and immediately do 5 reps with your right side. Rest ONLY AS NEEDED, and try to get through all 5 sets as quickly as possible

Option 2:
Density Triples
Perform 3 reps each side on the minute for 5-10 minutes. Only add more load once you can get in all 30 reps in 10 minutes. Go HEAVY with this one.

Option 3:
20 singles
Ok, this is actually a clean and press on each rep, but that just means more muscle is being used (not a bad thing!). You’re going to perform 1 left with your left, put the weight down, then one rep with your right. The goal is to get through all 20 reps in 5 minutes or less. This is awesome for fighters and the like as it replicates non stop explosive efforts over a relatively short period of time.

So grab some weights and throw that sucker overhead!

Do you want a beautiful lawn that you can relax in on a warm sunny day? Using a lawn aerator is the answer for you. Aeration is essential for healthy grass. There are several types of lawn aerators and ways that they aerate your lawn.

Core Aeration and Plug Aerating

Core & plug lawn aerators are two different names for the exact same thing. They are probably the most popular types of lawn aerators. Most professionals will use a core aerator. Core aerators actually pull cores (or plugs) of dirt out of your lawn. These cores are anywhere from 2-4 inches deep. The depth depends on how hard your soil is and how effective the machine is at coring.

Whether you’re renting a lawn aerator, or planning on purchasing one, you want to find out the tine depth. Check the tines to be sure they aren’t worn out, if they are too worn, you won’t get good plugs. Also, if you are looking into using a Plugger, be sure you know the hydraulics system is in good condition. They use hydraulics to pull the plugs rather than depending solely on the weight of the aerator.

Plug & core aeration is very effective because the extra space this creates in the soil relieves the roots of having to work their way through the compacted dirt. Grass roots then branch out and are able to develop deeper and gain more access to nutrients & water in the soil of course resulting in more healthy grass. The greatest advantage of aerating is that your grass roots will get stronger. Even if you fertilize often & use herbicides & pesticides to keep a healthy looking lawn, if your grass roots aren’t healthy, you don’t have healthy grass & it will be very hard to maintain your lawn.

And healthy grass is the number one way to fight off disease, destroying insects, moss, thatch, and even weeds. Keep using that lawn aerator to be sure to have a healthy happy lawn!

Spencer Arnold has owned his own lawn care business for 6 years. He specializes in lawn repair, renovation, and maintenance for health. If you need to know which lawn aerator is right for you he’s the one to ask! And he knows all the secrets about making and keeping your grass green.

Whether you have a sales force working for you, or do all the selling yourself there are 3 core sales skills required to succeed. These skills are entirely within your control. Once you own these skills you hold the potential to achieve whatever you want in sales.

The first core sales skill is the ability to focus on small steps. Contrary to what most sales people are led to believe setting big outlandish sales goals does more harm than good. If you can’t believe it you won’t achieve. Plus you trigger unnecessary negative internal dialog.

Focus on the next one small thing you can do to move toward what you want to accomplish and only that one thing.

For example, a lot of new sales people are told they just have to make a bunch of cold calls and if they do they’ll get the results they want. Well, we both know that’s not what happens. What really happens is you enthusiastically make a bunch of phone calls, you talk to a few people, and experience some pretty rude interactions, and end up with almost no appointments for your efforts.

In this situation you’re focusing on the prize of closing a specific number of sales. However, that end is far beyond your means. You have to get step one right before you can ever get all the other steps right and close the sale.

Realistically the first small step is getting one person to agree to speak with you on the phone. That’s right just getting one person to speak with you is the first small step.

The second core sales skill is commitment to daily progress. When you think about the things you’ve succeeded doing in the past and compare those successes against your failures there’s a key distinct difference. Typically, we give up on doing things when we don’t quickly experience progress. That means you have to commit to making certain you experience daily progress from the beginning.

Understand progress does not necessarily mean earning sales from day one. Going back to the small steps remember progress is measured in terms of small actions that produce measurable results. So if you were new to sales or new to the business progress could mean identifying the first 10 potential buyers you’ll contact and developing a clear message.

The third core sales skill is self-responsibility and self-accountability. No one but you is responsible for your success or your failure. That means you should never expect anyone to do things for you. You are responsible for learning, practicing, adapting, and implementing the skills you need to succeed. The more ownership you take the greater your success and commitment to taking the actions required to succeed in sales.

Many entrepreneurs and small business owners are growing a business without the right foundation. They may be tweeting away or building their brand or marketing- and yet, they are missing a fundamental ingredient for business success: A core message that attracts their ideal clients.

A clear core message sounds simple, but we see it missing time and time again with our clients and attendees at our talks and workshops – regardless if they are starting a new business or already running a multi-million dollar company.

The truth is, without this component, you can’t grow your business for real, sustained success- one that affords you an abundant lifestyle AND the freedom to live your life on your terms. You may have “some success”, but it is often short-lived. You can’t attain big success until your core message is clear, concise and communicated effectively to your target market.

Here are the 3 essential steps to craft a really effective core message for your business:

Step 1: What do you do and whom do you do it for?
What, precisely, do you “do” in your business? Who exactly is your target market? Describe them in as much detailed language as possible. Until you can answer these questions, you will be leaving clients and money on the table.

Step 2: What specific problems do you solve?
Every business solves problems of some kind. For example, one of our business clients realized she solves the problems of frustration and overspending by teaching her teenage clients and their parents a system for how to find and get accepted into one of their “best-fit colleges”.

We now help our business clients solve the problems of overwork or slow business growth with the implementation of our step-by-step Excelerated Success Business Development Plan ™.

What specific problems do you solve?

Part 3: Why should someone hire you over the competition?
How are you different? What sets you apart? Educational and professional degrees or whatever initials come after your name may be impressive, but experience, clear systems, and a killer core message are more imperative for long-term success.

Take the time to answer these questions, synthesize them into 1-3 sentences, and you will automatically position yourself ahead of most other business owners.

Practice saying your core message over and over so you can confidently communicate it in all of your marketing and to anyone, anywhere, who asks you about your business. And make sure your team or sales people are clear with the company’s core message as well.
