Autumn Internationals is a yearly event and it is also one of the most popular tournament in the history of rugby. If you have not attended Autumn Internationals before then here’s your chance to be among the audience. The Autumn rugby fixtures are now firmly established in the calendar for all the Home Nations, playing against the best of the Southern Hemisphere. Wales V South Africa match is going to be held in Millennium Stadium at Saturday November 13, 2010.

Outside centre Brian O’Driscoll, the current captain and Ireland’s current all-time leader in both tries and appearances, is considered one of the best rugby players in the world and led Ireland to only their second Grand Slam in March 2009. He was also captain of the Lions on their 2005 tour of New Zealand, although his on-field captaincy was cut short by a controversial injury in the Lions’ first Test. O’Driscoll was succeeded as Lions captain for their 2009 tour of South Africa by his current teammate, lock Paul O’Connell. Keith Wood, O’Driscoll’s predecessor as Ireland captain before retiring in 2003, was the inaugural IRB International Player of the Year in 2001. Ireland’s highest ever position in the IRB World Rankings is third which they reached in 2003 and 2006. They currently lie in fifth position as of 18 February 2010 after their defeat by France in the Six Nations.

The number one ranked team in the IRB World Rankings they were named the International Rugby Board (IRB) Team of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2008. Fifteen former All Blacks have been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame, one into the IRB Hall of Fame. The team first competed in 1884 against Cumberland County, New South Wales, and played their first Test match in 1903, a victory against Australia. This was followed by a tour of the northern hemisphere in 1905. The team’s early uniforms consisted of a black jersey with a silver fern and white knickerbockers. By their 1905 tour New Zealand were wearing all black, except for the silver fern, and their All Black name dates from this time. New Zealand traditionally perform a haka (M?ori challenge) before each match. Traditionally, the haka performed is Te Rauparaha’s Ka Mate, though since 2005, Kapa o Pango, a modified version of the 1924 All Blacks haka, Kia Whaka-ngawari, has occasionally been performed.

The Rugby World Cup is the premier international rugby union competition. The event is organized by the sport governing body, the International Rugby Board (IRB), and is contested by the men’s national teams. The inaugural tournament was held in 1987, hosted by both Australia and New Zealand, and is now contested every four years. The tournament is one of the largest international sporting competitions in the world.

England V Scotland is one of the games oldest rivalries, with the last England victory being at the World Cup Quarter Finals in 2007. The start of the Autumn Internationals begins with a bang! The national rugby- team is called England Rugby. The Rugby Football Union(RFU) and Premier Rugby Limited (PRL) are joint partners called England Rugby Limited (ERL) formed to manage All professional game in England. The RFU’s turnover for the year ended 30 June 2007 was £103.7 million, up from £82.7 million the previous year. In 2004/05, £18.9 million was distributed to member clubs.

England players traditionally wear white shorts, navy socks (although they are now white and red) with white tops, and a white shirt with a red rose embroidered on it, and for the first time in the English rugby team’s history, their away shirt is red (up until recently, navy blue has been the traditional colour).

Scottish rugby dates back to 1871, where they beat England in the first international rugby union match at Raeburn Place. Scotland competed in the Five Nations from the inaugural tournament in 1883, winning it 14 times outright—including the last ever Five Nations in 1999—and sharing it another 8. In 2000 the competition accepted a sixth competitor, Italy, thus forming the Six Nations. Since this change, Scotland have yet to win the competition. The Rugby World Cup was introduced in 1987 and Scotland have competed in all five competitions, the last being in 2007. Scotland’s best finish came in 1991, where they lost to the All Blacks in the third place play-off. Scotland have a strong rivalry with the English national team. They both annually compete for the Calcutta Cup. Each year, this fixture is played out as part of the Six Nations. England are the current holders after defeating Scotland 26–12 at Twickenham in the 2009 Six Nations and retaining the trophy with a 15–15 draw at Scotland’s home ground of Murrayfield in the 2010 edition. Whilst Scotland have a draw and two wins against England in the sides’ last three meetings at Murrayfield, they have recorded few victories over their “Auld Enemy” in recent years, beating them just four times since 1990. Furthermore, their last away victory over England was in 1983.

WALES coach Warren Gatland has been handed a major concern ahead of his autumn international campaign after Lions flanker Martyn Williams was cited for an incident during the Blues’ Heineken Cup win against Edinburgh. Williams is alleged to have dropped his knee into the face of Scotland full-back Chris Paterson during the first-half of the 18-17 victory at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday evening. The 35-year-old was cited by independent match commissioner Tony Lanaway and the IRB recommended action. Sanction for this offence is a suspension ranging between three weeks at the low end to 12 weeks at the high end, with a maximum penalty carrying a year’s ban. Williams will face a disciplinary hearing in Dublin tomorrow ahead of the Blues’ next Heineken Cup match against Castres in France on Friday.

And if openside flanker Williams is found guilty he could miss the international autumn series next month, depending on the severity of the suspension. Wales face the southern hemisphere superpowers of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa at the Millennium Stadium, with World Cup group opponents Fiji also visiting Cardiff in November. The opening match is against the Wallabies on Saturday, November 6, which is just over three weeks away. Williams’ citing was one of four complaints European Rugby Cup received from the opening round of matches with Scarlets replacement Jonny Fa’amatuainu accused of a dangerous tackle on Perpignan wing Adrien Plante. Former Scarlets second row Jamie Cudmore was alleged to have stamped on Saracens flanker Jacques Burger, while playing for Clermont Auvergne, while Munster centre Sam Tuitupou is alleged to have committed a dangerous tackle on London Irish scrum-half Paul Hodgson.

Wales play in red jerseys embroidered with the Prince of Wales’s feathers. Their current home ground is the Millennium Stadium, completed in 1999 to replace the National Stadium at Cardiff Arms Park. Ten former Welsh players have been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame, and two of the ten have been inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame.
The Wales national rugby union team represent Wales in international rugby union tournaments. They compete annually in the Six Nations Championship with England, France, Ireland, Italy and Scotland. Wales have won the Six Nations and its predecessors 24 times outright, second only to England with 25 wins. Wales most recent championship win came in 2008. They also compete in the Rugby World Cup every four years. The International Rugby Board (IRB) regards Wales as a Tier One rugby nation, and ranks them eighth in the world as of 1 February 2010.
